Hello, SWPACC Community!

We need your help to represent our community at this year’s Rock the Quarry, an event that brings folks together with music, food, and memories at the beautiful quarry along the Panhandle Trail.  This is a unique opportunity to demonstrate rock climbing to the public and help us advance our mission of securing formal access to a new climbing area near Pittsburgh.

We are looking for volunteers to assist with two important tasks:

  1. Demonstrate Climbing: Show event-goers what climbing is all about by climbing some routes that have been established at the quarry.
  2. Table & Educate: Staff a table to talk about SWPACC’s mission and our ongoing work with the Collier Friends of the Panhandle Trail and the township to gain official approval for this new crag.

As access to climbing here is not formally established, this is, for now, a one-time opportunity where we have permission to climb. SWPACC is in ongoing conversations with representatives from the Township and we are pleased to be able to collaborate. Help us further demonstrate our commitment to being good partners!

Event Details:

  • Event: Rock the Quarry
  • Dates: Friday, August 22nd and Saturday, August 23rd, 2025
  • Hours: Friday (5 PM – 11 PM) & Saturday (3 PM – 11 PM)
  • Location: Panhandle Trail, Collier, PA

We are looking for roughly three volunteers to be present at all times to cover both the climbing demonstrations and the table. If you can only make it for a few hours, that’s still very helpful!

Important Notes:

  • Volunteers must be safety-oriented and comfortable demonstrating climbing to a public audience.
  • Helmets are required, and you must bring your own gear.
  • The grades of the sport and trad routes are around 5.9, with some moves up to 5.10. Top rope setup is available.

If you are interested in volunteering, please email Valerie Kramer at valerie.kramer26@gmail.com with your availability. Please also consider asking your climbing friends to get involved!

Thank you for helping us grow our community and secure new crags for the future!
