Last weekend, the Southwest Pennsylvania Climbers Coalition (SWPACC) took a significant step toward developing a new local climbing area. Through a collaboration with the Panhandle Trail Association, we were invited to participate in the annual Rock the Quarry event in Collier, PA, to showcase the potential for climbing in the area.

This was more than just a fun event; it was a crucial step in our mission to secure formal access to new climbing areas. We believe that by demonstrating our commitment and passion for the sport, we can build goodwill and show landowners and local officials that climbers are responsible, safety-conscious, and dedicated community partners.

Community Support in Action

To make this a reality, a dedicated group of volunteers put in a tremendous effort. On an initial work day, 10 dedicated volunteers—built a new trail, prepped the routes, and cleared a massive rock face to display our community flag. The Panhandle Trail Association was so impressed by this work, it set the stage for a successful event.

At Rock the Quarry, our volunteers were the face of the climbing community. A total of 25 people volunteered over two days, spending their time talking to the public and demonstrating climbing on the newly established routes. Their energy and enthusiasm were truly impressive. We even lit up the wall for a dramatic and inspiring night display!

This kind of volunteer support is critical. If you want more outdoor climbing access, this is your group, and this is the kind of pitching in that makes it happen. Thank you to everyone who came out to help.

Building a Path to Access

The public response was overwhelmingly positive. We had over 130 people indicate their support for climbing in Collier, with over 60 being local residents. Most importantly, no objections or concerns were raised.

We will continue to work with our contacts in the community and hope to make progress toward formal access.

In the meantime, we need your help. The climbing at this site is not yet officially sanctioned. Please do not climb there or share its location with others. We are counting on the entire climbing community to respect this temporary boundary, which will help us continue to build trust and goodwill.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support of SWPACC’s mission.
